Flin Flon Chamber of Commerce

HISTORY & OBJECTIVE

The Flin Flon & District Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1948. The predecessor to the Chamber was an organization called The Board of Trade, dating from 1929. The original objectives are still held today - To promote and improve trade and commerce and the economic, civic and social welfare of the district. We are a group of concerned business people who are interested in improving local conditions and promoting the welfare of the community and its area - to promote the prosperity and growth in a united effort for the good of all. The local Chamber represents the communities of Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach, and Cranberry Portage.

FLINTY

Flin Flon boasts the only city named after a science fiction character. Josiah Flintabattey Flonatin (Flinty for short) came to us through a novel, the Sunless City. Al Capp (Lil Abner) donated his time and talent to create this image. The Chamber had the statue constructed and moved to its present location at the Flin Flon Tourist Park, Flinty overlooks the perimeter on Number 10 highway.

Constructed in 1962, 23 feet high and made of fiberglass.
The creator is Al Capp (of Lil Abner fame) and copyrighted in 1964.

In 2003 the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce had a coin minted. The $3 "Flinty Coins" were legal tender in the City of Flin Flon until September 30, 2004. The collector's coin are still available for purchase contact the Chamber Office at 204-687-4518 or e-mail flinflonchamber @mts.net
